Collection: Kurinuki

Each ceramic piece begins as a solid block of stoneware clay, carefully carved by hand using the traditional Japanese technique of Kurinuki. This ancient method allows Amy to create richly textured vessels with organic forms and distinctive carved surfaces, ensuring that every piece is completely unique.

The finished ceramics are glazed in a carefully selected palette of soft, neutral tones, featuring copper oxide blues alongside expressive crawling glazes. These finishes enhance the depth and character of the hand-carved surfaces, celebrating the marks of the making process while adding strong variations in colour and texture.

Creating each handmade ceramic is a slow and considered process, with every piece taking an average of three months to complete. The clay is first divided into blocks of varying sizes depending on the intended form before each piece is hollowed out by hand. The vessel is then left to dry naturally until it reaches a leather-hard state, allowing it to be carved in stages. An initial carving establishes the form, followed by a second period of drying before a second refining carve.

Once the carving is complete, the ceramic is dried for a minimum of one month to ensure all moisture has evaporated. Larger or thicker pieces can take up to four months to dry fully before entering a 15hr bisque firing. After firing, every vessel is individually hand-glazed, with each glaze applied in multiple coats to achieve depth and consistency. The ceramics then undergo a final glaze firing of approximately 18hrs, revealing the rich textures, colours and finishes that define Amy's work.

The time and craftsmanship invested in every piece make each ceramic a truly one-of-a-kind object. Whether choosing a functional mug, a sculptural vessel or a decorative object, no two pieces are ever the same.
